Do you need insurance to drive a trailer?

Vehicle insurance is mandatory, trailer insurance is not. However, not having it can be hugely costly if anything goes wrong. Trailers are usually covered by third party insurance under your existing policy, but this means that you aren’t covered for any damage to the trailer itself if an accident happens.

What is trailer insurance?

Usually, a standalone trailer insurance policy is intended to protect your actual trailer against a range of risks, such as theft, malicious damage, accidental damage and storm damage. Sometimes policies can include European cover and insurance for high-value items and in some cases the loss of business income if you’re using your trailer for work when it’s damaged or stolen. Keep in mind that you might need separate policies for trailer tent insurance or caravan insurance.

What are the main benefits of trailer insurance?

Peace of mind. With a good trailer insurance policy, you can rest assured that if there’s an accident or the trailer is damaged or stolen, those costs will be covered for you. Without a trailer insurance policy, you are usually only covered for third-party insurance, which means any damage to other vehicles will be covered, but not damage to the trailer itself. If you invested in your trailer, or use it for work, you will want to protect those costs.

Does house insurance cover trailers?

Home insurance policies usually don’t include trailer insurance, and some even specifically exclude this type of cover. Whilst it’s sometimes possible to include trailer insurance as an add-on to an existing home insurance policy, this might not be the most financially prudent option. Our trailer insurance policies are designed specifically to protect trailers, giving you excellent coverage.

How much can I tow?

To determine this you will need to find out your ‘maximum authorised mass’ (MAM). This is listed in the car manual and is normally shown on a plate or sticker fitted somewhere on the car’s body.

  • If you got your licence before 1 January 1997: You can usually drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of up to 8,250kg MAM.
  • If you got your licence on or after 1 January 1997: You can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM.
